Food for thought
Faced with organising a crucial dinner event for the board of Dell Inc. and a selection of its key customers, Lara Etherington, PA to Dell’s President, EMEA, turned to Jugglers for help.
Dell Inc. has built its success and reputation on direct contact and strong relationships with its customers. This direct model was the company’s founding principle and continues to set the company apart from its competitors today.
In the EMEA region, a three yearly board/customer dinner and social evening sits at the pinnacle of Dell’s customer relationship management strategy. The dinner brings together the Dell board, including CEO Michael Dell and President and Chief Operating Officer, Kevin Rollins, and key customers from across Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
Lara Etherington, PA to Dell’s President for EMEA, knows that getting the event right is crucial: “Some of Dell’s most important customers from the UK, France, Germany, Sweden, Switzerland and Saudi Arabia fly into London especially for this dinner, so the whole evening has to be special. Everything from the venue to the catering, to music and even lighting has to be perfect. Customers must leave thinking ‘Wow, Dell really looks after me’. Anything else would be counterproductive and potentially damaging.”
Creating such a flawless event is an involved process. Lara was concerned that it would be difficult to devote enough attention to it alongside an already hectic day to day schedule: “Hiring in caterers, musicians, florists and everything else is a mammoth task in its own right. But pulling all that together to create an experience that is genuinely prestigious, professional and different is a major project.
“I needed to find someone I could trust to project manage the whole event so that I could take a back seat and get on with the other 1001 things my job demands.”
A total solution
Lara had worked with Jugglers consultants before and knew them to be thorough, professional, creative and reliable. She had no hesitation in asking the company to help with the customer event: “I needed to work with people I could trust – people who I could give initial guidance to and then leave them to get on with the job. I knew the Jugglers people would have these qualities in abundance and would be great to work with.”
Jugglers was involved in the event from the word go. Managing Director, Daniella Thomas, took on the role of project manager, starting with the critical task of venue selection. She said: “The important thing was to find a venue that was special in its own right, but which would also provide the setting for an amazing experience for every guest.”
After an exhaustive search and assessment process a clear favourite emerged – the Banqueting House at Whitehall Palace. “It was perfect,” Lara said. “It was sumptuous and prestigious and, with the Rubens ceiling, had the real ‘wow factor’ we were looking for.”
With the venue secured, Daniella’s expertise really came into its own. Calling on the knowledge and contacts of a range of Juggler’s consultants, she set about creating a truly memorable event. She worked with caterers and florists, venue managers and a string quartet to manage the finest details and ensure that nothing would interrupt the flow and ambiance of the evening.
Lara explained: “Daniella proved to be an excellent judge of character. She vetted every single supplier to make sure they could be relied upon to deliver on their promises. She took care of everything - menus and food tasting to place settings and music. Needless to say, everything was perfect.”
Peace of mind
“The evening was a stunning success,” said Lara. “Jugglers created a special experience for all concerned and the flow of the evening was just right. Feedback from customers was glowing.”
According to Lara, the success of the evening owed a great deal to the professionalism and expertise of the Jugglers team: “They delivered in every area. The service was thorough, professional and above all proactive. They really took the initiative, which allowed me to stand back and trust them to get it right.”
Turning to Jugglers meant that Lara’s peace of mind was guaranteed. The team was a pleasure to work with. Lara explained: “The nature of my job means that I have to be a perfectionist. Stressed out executives crying out for affordable ‘life relief’
Baydon, Wiltshire, 2nd May 2003: Everyday home management and ‘lifestyle administration’ tasks add up to an extra working day every week for stressed out executives in the UK. That’s according to research carried out by lifestyle management specialists, Jugglers. Its Modern Lives research project found that the average executive could save eight hours per week by delegating routine personal tasks.
The research also revealed that the vast majority would jump at the chance to offload home management, holiday planning, gardening and lifestyle administration if an affordable solution was available:
- 82% of respondents revealed they would use a lifestyle management service
- 59% would pay up to £100 per month for lifestyle management services
- 12% would pay up to £200, whilst 18% would pay more.
Jugglers’ research also highlighted the different approaches to lifestyle management taken by men and women. 97% of male respondents said they would use a lifestyle management company, whilst women were more cautious – just 77% wanted lifestyle managers. However, women would value the services of a lifestyle manager more highly, and were willing to pay more:
- 83% of men wanted lifestyle management and were willing to pay up to £100 per month
- 31% of women would pay up to £200, 23% would pay more than £200 with just 46% going for a low cost service.
Daniella Thomas, co-founder of Jugglers commented: “Our research confirmed what we already suspected. For thousands of people, lifestyle administration gets in the way of simply living. People are trying so hard to juggle their lives and are crying out for an affordable, professional lifestyle management service, and that is exactly why Jugglers was established to provide every type of service for our clients.”
She continued: “The split between men and women is interesting. The fact that women would value lifestyle management services more highly, suggests that they still bear the brunt of lifestyle management – despite leading executive lives just like their male colleagues.”
